The Baku branch of Sechenov University and the National Oncology Center of Azerbaijan held a joint International Scientific and Practical Conference

The international scientific and practical conference "Thyroid Cancer and Metabolic Disorders: A Modern Approach," organized by the Baku branch, was timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Baku branch of Sechenov University and aimed at sharing scientific and practical knowledge on modern methods of diagnosing and treating thyroid diseases, as well as enhancing the knowledge and skills of specialists in this field.

The conference was attended by general surgeons, oncologists, endocrinologists, radiologists, and therapists.

Opening the event, Professor Aziz Aliyev, Rector of the Baku branch of Sechenov University and leading surgical oncologist in the Head and Neck Tumors Department of the National Oncology Center of the Ministry of Health of Azerbaijan, noted that the branch has undergone significant development in recent years.

"Our university was established in 2015 by the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and at the initiative of the First Lady and Honorary Professor of Sechenov University Mehriban Aliyeva. The university is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and collaborates with more than 30 hospitals. Our students undergo internships at these hospitals. The university has 720 students and 109 residents, and faculty come from Moscow," the rector said.

According to him, the Simulation Training Center provides practical skills training and accreditation for students from Sechenov University and Azerbaijan Medical University.

"The Simulation Training Center of the Baku branch has received accreditation from the European Society for Simulation Education, and we are proud to have been providing training to residents of the Karabakh Economic Zone and local doctors since last year," added Aziz Aliyev.

The professor also said: "On May 14, the CIS Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Foundation presented me with the 'Stars of the Commonwealth' award in Dushanbe. This award was given to me 'for outstanding contribution and achievements in science and education.'" In addition to the award itself, a cash prize of 2 million rubles was awarded. Representatives from all CIS countries were present in the hall, and I want to especially emphasize that when I was invited to speak, I announced that I had decided to donate this prize to the Karabakh Revival Fund. Of course, this is a drop in the ocean compared to the extensive work our state is doing, but for me, it is a great honor. As I speak these words, I am proud of my homeland and my leader, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Heydarovich Aliyev. Because our heroic army, which liberated the Karabakh region under his leadership, has given us the opportunity to speak these words. Today, we can confidently say: Karabakh is Azerbaijan! This region is rapidly reviving. It is thanks to leaders like President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva that we are proud of our homeland – of the progress Azerbaijan has achieved and how it has transformed into a modern state.

Thanks to the leadership of our Supreme Commander-in-Chief and our valiant, heroic army, we have reclaimed our lands, and today we march proudly with our heads held high."

Next, Professor Seza Ali Güleç, Founding President and CEO of the Miami Cancer Research Center, addressed the conference. In his speech, the professor touched on the history of thyroid cancer treatment. Referring to an important study on this disease conducted several years ago, he stated that all types of thyroid cancer have high rates of progression. The professor emphasized that treating those at risk is not as easy as previously thought.

Presenting a presentation on modern surgical treatment for thyroid cancer, Professor Aziz Aliyev noted that the main goal of the operation is complete removal of the tumor with minimal risk of damage to surrounding structures. According to him, the most common cancers in Azerbaijan among men are lung and stomach cancer, and among women, breast, colon, and thyroid cancer.

Professor Valentin Fadeev, Director of the Endocrinology Clinic at I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, gave a presentation on changes in the concept of primary diagnosis of nodular goiter.

Fuad Novruzov, MD, Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine and Radionuclide Therapy at the National Oncology Center, then presented on "Other Radioligand Treatment Tactics for Iodine-Deficient Metastatic Thyroid Cancer." Bioinformatician Burulca Uluvar from the Berlin Institute of Health spoke on "The Molecular Basis of Radioactive Iodine Theranostics." Professor of Cardiology Francesco Cosentino from the Karolinska Institute and University Hospital in Sweden spoke on "Diabetes and Cardiovascular Diseases: Problems and Challenges from a Cardiologist's Perspective."
