Rector of the Baku branch of Sechenov University, Professor Aziz Aliyev, was awarded the CIS Interstate Humanitarian Prize "Stars of the Commonwealth"

The Stars of the Commonwealth Award Council of the Interstate Foundation for Humanitarian Cooperation announced the names of the 2024 winners of the CIS's premier humanitarian award.

The Stars of the Commonwealth Award is presented annually for outstanding achievements in the humanitarian field that meet international standards and contribute to the development of each participating country, as well as to strengthening unity and cooperation within the Commonwealth of Independent States. This year, 15 nominees from eight countries were nominated. The jury, comprised of respected figures in science, culture, and education from the CIS countries, selected seven laureates whose achievements were deemed the most significant and impactful for the entire humanitarian space of the Commonwealth.

Professor Aziz Aliyev, Rector of the Baku branch of Sechenov University, was named the winner in the category "For Outstanding Contribution and Achievements in Science and Education." The monetary award accompanying this prize was donated in full to the Karabakh Revival Foundation.

At the award ceremony, Professor Aliyev said: "Dear guests, it is a great honor for me to be among you. I am very proud to be the rector of the Baku branch of Sechenov University. I also work as a surgical oncologist in the head and neck department of the National Oncology Center under the leadership of Academician Jamil Aliyev, the founder of oncology services in Azerbaijan. I would like to thank the Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Foundation, all its staff, and the Chairman of the Foundation, Polad Bulbul oglu, for this prestigious award."

In 2015, by decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Heydarovich Aliyev, and at the initiative of First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, our Branch was established. Mehriban Aliyeva is an honorary professor at Sechenov University and supports our Branch in every way. We would not have achieved such success without her support. Our Branch has 720 students, and 110 residents are trained at our clinical sites. The Branch has agreements with more than 30 clinics in Azerbaijan. The faculty comes from Moscow, and I would like to express my gratitude to Sechenov University Rector Pyotr Vitalyevich Glybochko, Vice Rector Andrey Alekseevich Svistunov, and the entire University team.

We are extremely proud to have the most modern simulation center in the region, which recently received accreditation from the European Society for Simulation Education in Medicine. We conduct training not only for our own students but also for students of the Azerbaijan Medical University, and conduct training in various regions for doctors, healthcare workers, and the general public. We are extremely proud that last year we began conducting training for the general public and doctors in the Karabakh economic region.

I'd also like to point out that I'll be donating the cash prize from the "Stars of the Commonwealth" award to the Karabakh Revival Fund. Of course, this is a drop in the ocean compared to what our government is doing to revive Karabakh, but it's a great honor for me.
