Methods of combating cancer at the Azerbaijani National Oncology Center discussed in London

On October 10, Academician Jamil Aliyev, Director General of the National Oncology Center, met with Professor David Kerr, a renowned British scientist in cancer research, and Professor of Oxford University, Britain, through the mediation and participation of Baroness Nicholson Winterbourne, the British Prime Minister's Trade Envoy for Azerbaijan, Iraq and Turkmenistan.

During the meeting, Baroness Nicholson welcomed the special attention and care paid by President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva to the development of medicine in the country, and conveyed her deep respect and sincere greetings to them.

At the request of David Kerr, Academician Jamil Aliyev was provided with detailed information on cancer prevention and treatment methods in Azerbaijan, measures taken at the National Oncology Center to combat cancer, including the center's role in extending the life of people suffering from cancer and increasing the recovery rate, equipment and practices used (radiology, MRI, chemotherapy, surgery, etc.). In this regard, views were also exchanged on the trends of decrease and increase in the relevant types of cancer in Azerbaijan.

In turn, D. Kerr noted that the presence of numerous treatment rooms at the National Oncology Center, the experience of sending mobile treatment vehicles equipped with all medical equipment to the regions for examination and treatment of the population suffering from cancer, as well as the fact that 70 percent of those tested and examined at the center are not suffering from cancer, but simply ordinary patients using advanced diagnostics, are commendable.

The meeting also discussed the issue of training and education of cancer specialists and doctors in Azerbaijan. D. Kerr showed special interest in this issue and noted that there are prospects for cooperation in this area within the relevant medical structures of the University of Oxford in the future. Academician J. Aliyev invited D. Kerr to visit Azerbaijan to discuss bilateral cooperation opportunities on the spot and visit the National Oncology Center. The invitation was accepted with pleasure by D. Kerr.

At the end of the meeting, an agreement was reached to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on medical cooperation between the University of Oxford and the National Oncology Center.

The meeting, held at the London headquarters of the AMAR International Charitable Foundation, which is engaged in charity in the Middle East, and at the British House of Lords, was also attended by AMAR Chief of Staff Andrew Metfen and Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United Kingdom Tahir Taghizade. Academician Jamil Aliyev and the AMAR leadership exchanged views on the programs implemented by this organization in Iraq and the possible contribution of Azerbaijan to these programs.

Academician Jamil Aliyev conveyed to Baroness Nicholson the deep sympathy and respect of Azerbaijani doctors and medical personnel whom the latter met during her visits to Baku.
